An Interview with Jeffrey Costello And Robert Tagliapietra

What was your inspiration for this season?

We began with Jeffrey’s amazing watercolors of chrysanthemums and loved how they looked lyrical and spooky which brought to mind movies like Beetlejuice and Dr. Seussian characters.

How did you come to find it?

That led to us thinking about the word Hauntings and how at the core it is something evocative and spectre-like. We loved how the prints along with our techniques in draping and pattern making combined to create clothes that had an inherent kinetic feeling but also a romanticism in the way they skim and touch the body.

Who is the Costello Tagliapietra woman?

After years of doing custom and private order, we have learned to address every woman’s needs. She has confidence in who she is and is not afraid of her romantic and sensual sides. At the base, our job is to make women feel and look beautiful and everyone deserves that.

Do you work with a muse?

Not anyone in particular just women in general.

Where do you look for style inspiration?

Music, books, movies, as a designer your mind acts both as a sponge and a sieve, our job is to decipher what is going on culturally and feel out what is coming next.

Who starts the trends: designers or street style?

I think Designers should be starting things, though that is not necessarily how everyone works, street style is where interpretation comes in and you see clearly the creative ways people interpret the works on the runways. Though some designer’s definitely get inspiration from the streets, it can be a bit of the ole… what came first… the chicken or the egg story.

Tell us about the launch of your diffusion line C&T?

We are so excited to see the world of Costello Tagliapietra open up and become what we always believed it could be. It is exciting to be able to offer something that is so much more accessible price-wise.

What is next for you boys?

Accessories and mens are on the horizon right now… the boys have been asking for years and what C&T dress doesn’t scream for a C&T necklace!

Are you excited about anything in fashion right now?

Yes our new line!

Which shows are you looking forward to seeing this season?

We really only have the time to attend our own show!

Describe your personal style in three words?

Suburban – lumberjack – scientist

Tell us one thing we don’t know about each of you!?

We both love video games
