If you’re in New York this Spring, don’t miss out on the chance to see Space Program: Mars at the Park Avenue Armory.  Painter, sculptor and installation artist Tom Sachs has transformed the 55,000 square foot space into a monumental installation and interactive performance art piece that examines everything from NASA, our compulsion to explore outer space, and American pop culture.

Because it’s a “working mission” you can chat with various artists on site who are performing their daily tasks dressed in matching khakis, striped ties and sneakers.  Which brings us to the next subject… a collaboration with Nike to celebrate the exhibit called NIKEcraft - a capsule collection of sneakers, jackets and accessories to outfit you for your next expedition to Mars!

Last night, Estelle and I attended a cocktail party at Barney’s New York celebrating their launch of C&T Costello Tagliapietra.  The event was hosted by models Anne V. and Hilary Rhoda and guests in attendance included Meredith Melling Burke from Vogue and Rachel Roy.  But our favorite part of the night was the refreshments: mini grilled cheese sandwiches, french fries and champagne!

Quite ironic isn’t it that I help to build brands and yet I am such an anti label consumer and sporter (is that a word?). I believe there is a difference between labels and brands. A great brand equals trust whereas labels for me are a stamp of what we buy into believing that they add or help create the perception of who we think we are or who we want to be…. If I carry this bag, the perception will be that I enjoy a certain lifestyle of luxury and disposable flexibility, if I sport this label, perhaps people will see me as a  cool, in the know artistic style maker, creator. Or if I wear this label perhaps I will be viewed as leading and encompassing a  sports driven lifestyle.

At the same time, the measure of the strength of the brand is reflected in the clarity of the message getting delivered by the label. Does what the brand think they represent translate into what the consumer thinks it does? In other words, what does sporting a label do for the consumer? Does the consumer understand and see the value? And then, do they buy into it?

I guess like everything else – we are all searching for that elusive constant desire for acceptance, recognition  and belonging. Look at me, see me, I belong to this tribe……its all good, I guess the trick is navigating thru all the slick media campaigns alluring and promising what you will get by association and affiliation. Above all else make sure that YOU  wear the brand and not the other way around. Make sure its your choosing and not someone else’s. Guess that’s to be true about any other label we allow society, family, friends, loved ones, co workers to put on us. Whether it be – - he’s the cancer survivor, the guy with adhd, the widow, the kid who lost a parent, the teacher, the girl who didn’t finish college, etc….. Don’t let anyone put ANY label on you. And by the way, don’t be afraid to wear as many of them as possible and all at the same time and enjoy them all!  :). Don’t be afraid to sport one label then the next day another. Especially with regards to fashion – have FUN – that’s what fashion is all about and sometimes labels move us away from. No labels, limits, or boundaries…..
