What is the best way to get a career started in fashion merchandising with a degree in business?

Hi and thank you so much for your question. It honestly doesn’t matter what your educational background is and don’t let anyone tell you that this matters. Having a degree in business is a great base. I would first ask you what in particular about merchandising do you enjoy? Working with collections? Working directly with the designer? Or more of the business aspect of learning to be a phenomenal merchandiser that impacts the fiscal viability of a line? Depending on that, I would encourage you to start gaining some experience. So, for example, if you love the idea of working with a designer and helping merchandise the line, seek your favorite designer and offer to intern in merchandising for them. If you love the idea of the fiscal aspect, maybe working in a showroom or at the sales level will be fascinating for you.

Bottom line is experience, passion, a positive attitude and committed diligence is are so much more meaningful. Educational backgrounds are important as foundations but what you do with them is what matters. I have a double major in business and merchandising and they were great starts for me. I have also hired people that didn’t go tot school for fashion but were just passionate about it.

The other day I sent a quick email to a lead designer thanking them for their beautiful work. They responded by letting me know it was not only such a great way to start their day by receiving the email but it was the most positive encouraging email they have ever received. It left me speechless. I mean this individual is one of the most respected in their segmented field of craft. And, seriously? They of all people have never received a positive email about their work? Astonishing….it got me thinking about how something so small can shift energy and momentum in and for another. What would happen if we all just acknowledged one another with kindness and positivity. Could you imagine? instead of assuming, its not necessary or I am sure this person hears this all the time…to just say, awesome job, well done, thank you, you’re special, you are loved, you are celebrated, you are appreciated. wow! how different a world this could be….

As I watched the interview with NBA star Jason Collins and Oprah it struck me how truly blessed all of us in Fashion are. From the inception of my journey in fashion, gay men and women have proudly and blessedly have been part of my social circles. How truly fortunate we all are who work in fashion that ours is an industry of true acceptance. Sometimes, I think we take it for granted as its all we have known. Bravo to JC for openly coming out as the first active professional NBA player. He spoke of his belief that we are all God’s children and that for years, he wrestled with inner unrest and fear of rejection and abandonment if the truth was revealed. I believe all love is love…For us all, its really about living our own authentic life and stepping into our truth. For Jason, as Oprah said, his legacy just got created. For so many little boys and girls throughout the world, he has helped to create a door to set them free. As for JC, it is without a doubt that his true calling will come to reveal and infinite doors of opportunity will now open that he is walking his walk proud. BRAVO for his courage and truth. GRATEFUL for our industry and the safety and freedom it has given us all.
